Environmental criteria for cement based products - ECRICEM I

Regulations such as the European Construction Products Directive (CPD) or national Drinking Water Standards contain provisions to exclude or minimise adverse effects on environment or public hygiene through the use of construction materials.

The assessment of the "environmental quality" of construction products such as cement and cementitious products is usually based on the determination of their leaching characteristics, e.g. the potential release of constituents such as trace elements (heavy metals) or organic compounds to the environment when the products get in direct contact with water or soil.

Methodology Guideline EN 12920

The purpose of this prestandard is to provide a methodology for the determination of the leaching behaviour of a waste under specified conditions i.e. in a disposal or utilisation scenario within a specified time frame. The methodology is designed to ensure that waste specific properties and scenario conditions are taken into account.

An Integrated Framework for Evaluating Leaching in Waste Management and Utilization of Secondary Materials

A framework for the evaluation of inorganic constituent leaching from wastes and secondary materials is presented. The framework is based on the measurement of intrinsic leaching properties of the material in conjunction with mathematical modeling to estimate release under field management scenarios. Site specific and default scenarios are considered, which may be selected based on the evaluation context. A tiered approach is provided to allow the end-user to balance between the specificity of the release estimate, the amount of testing knowledge required, a priori knowledge, and resources required to complete an evaluation. Detailed test methodologies are provided for a suite of laboratory leaching tests.

How to judge release of dangerous substances from construction products to soil and groundwater

For construction products to be accepted on the EU market they need to fulfil essential requirement number 3 as specified in the Construction Products Directive (89/106/EEC). This work is meant as preparation and guidance to the CEN work on dangerous substances and provides a generic approach to deal with the release of a broad range of contaminants from a wide range of construction products to soil and groundwater. The key question is if there is a potential  'unacceptable' release of contaminants from the construction product to soil & groundwater and how this can be determined.

Development of horizontally standarized leaching tests

This work is carried out for the Dutch Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment (VROM), Soil, Water and Rural Environment Directorate (project nr.2003.06.089). Anticipating on the European Construction Products Directive (CPD), and the developments under the Water Framework Directive, etcetera, this report is meant as a basis for further discussions on horizontal standardization and harmonization of leaching tests for building materials on a national as well on a European level.
