ECO-SERVE - European Construction in Service of Society

Contract N° G1RT-CT-2002-05085

On
November 15 2002, the European Commission launched a Thematic Network under the Specific Programme 'Promoting Competitive and Sustainable Growth'. The title of the network is "European Construction in Service of Society" in brief; ECO-SERVE NETWORK.

The kick-off meeting of the network was held at CSTC's office in Zaventem on December 10, 2002, attended by the Principal Contractors of the Network as well as by the Scientific Officer of the Commission, Mr. George Katalagarianakis.

The scheduled duration of the Network is 4 years.

The main objective of the ECO-SERVE Network is to identify the needs of the European Construction Industry in its endeavour towards sustainability of the industries' products and production processes.

The Network will achieve this goal by an exemplified approach addressing selected segments of the industry, i.e.

  • Cement production
  • Aggregate and Concrete production
  • Design and Production of Pavements

It will be a consequential objective of the Network to define the needs for activities in the form of collateral research, political activities or large integrated projects, which may be considered vital for the desired evolution of the industry.

The Network is organised in four technical clusters and an administrative unit charged with tasks of co-ordination and overall management of the network.

This administrative unit is responsible for application of common environmental indicator systems throughout the network, for dissemination of results and extension of the network into the entire European society.

The four technical clusters of members are addressing the following topics:

  • Cluster 1 – Use of wastes as secondary fuels and raw materials for cement clinker production
  • Cluster 2 – Production and application of blended cements
  • Cluster 3 – Concrete and aggregate production
  • Cluster 4 - Pavements
